Naomi Simon, Decorah end season on top at Iowa wrestling championships
Naomi Simon went out a champion, helping Decorah claim team honors Friday night at the IGHSAU State Wrestling Championships.
Simon, an unbeaten three-time state champion entering the season, clinched a title in convincing fashion with a major decision in the 170-pound final over Autumn Elsbury of South Tama County.
Prior to that, Simon, who ended her four-year career with a record of 130-0, had pinned all four of her opponents in under two minutes.
Teammate Chloe Sheffield finished second at 100 pounds to defending champion Katie Biscoglia of Raccoon River-Northwest. Biscoglia, a sophomore, finished the year 50-0 and is on a 96-match win streak.
East Buchanan and Raccoon River-Northwest tied for second in the team race with Waverly-Shell Rock fourth and Lewis Central fifth.
Ottumwa’s Jasmine Luedtke, Riverside Oakland’s Molly Allen, Waverly-Shell Rock’s Kara Djoumessi and Spencer’s Olivia Huckfelt all made successful title defenses. Huckfelt picked up her third title and ended the last three years without a loss.
Allen, a sophomore, is also unbeaten in her career with a record of 63-0.
Other champions included Layla Phillips of Mason City, Reanah Utterback from Sigourney-Keota, Camille Schult of Waverly-Shell Rock, Colbie Tenborg from Saydel, Bella Miller from Dubuque Wahlert, Mahri Manz of Lewis Central, Nicole Olson of Missouri Valley and Libby Dix from Mount Vernon.
Utterback, a junior, placed eighth competing at the boys state meet last year.
